Recent studies have found that people who eat tomatoes and tomato products regularly are less likely to suffer from cancer, coronary heart diseases and other chronic illnesses. Tomatoes are healthy for several reasons. They are low in fat and calories and are cholesterol-free. They are a good source of fibre and protein. In addition, tomatoes are rich in vitamins A and C, beta-carotene, potassium, as well as the antioxidant lycopene. One medium-sized tomato provides almost half of the required daily allowance (RDA) of vitamin C for adults
The sweet, juicy facts
To date, several population studies have indicated that eating more tomatoes lowers the risk of several types of cancer. A study released by the University of Milan suggested that people who ate at least one serving of a tomato-based product per day had 50 per cent less chance of developing digestive tract cancer than those who didn't eat tomatoes (1). A 1985 study conducted by Harvard University found that older Americans who regularly eat tomatoes are less likely to die from all forms of cancer (2)
The secret ingredient
A scientific report from Harvard School of Public Health suggested that men who ate 10 or more servings per week of tomato products, including tomato sauce and pizza sauce are up to 34 per cent less likely to develop prostate cancer (3). This study monitored dietary habits and the incidence rate of prostate cancer in 48,000 men for four years and assessed over 46 different fruits and vegetables and related products on the basis of their consumption frequency. Tomato sauce was most strongly associated with a lower risk of prostate cancer. The protective effects were even stronger when the analysis focused upon the risk of more advanced or aggressive prostate cancer. The key ingredient was found to be the powerful antioxidant lycopene
Recent studies have found
.that lycopene is easily absorbed and stored in the prostate, adrenal glands and testes
an association between lowered risk of breast (4) as well as bladder cancer (5) with a higher concentration of lycopene in the serum
that men who have a high concentration of lycopene in their fat tissues have a lower risk of heart attack than men whose tissues have a low concentration (6)
Lycopene -- one of a family of pigments called carotenoids which occur naturally in fruits and vegetables -- was identified to be responsible for the beneficial effects of tomatoes in all of these studies
Lycopene-- is an antioxidant that once absorbed by the body, helps to prevent and repair damaged cells. Antioxidants are compounds that fight free radicals in the body and have been shown to inhibit DNA oxidation that can lead to some cancers. Antioxidants are the internal bodyguards that protect our cells from free radicals. The degenerative effects of free radicals are not limited to cancer - they can also cause blockages in the arteries, joint deterioration, nervous system degradation and aging
In laboratory experiments, lycopene has been found to possess the most protective effects against free radicals within the entire carotenoid family (7). Although other fruits including watermelon, pink grapefruit and papaya contain lycopene, tomatoes and tomato-based products account for 85 per cent of dietary lycopene in North America. Bright red, ripe tomatoes have more lycopene than green or yellow, unripe ones
More lycopene is absorbed from cooked or processed tomatoes than from raw ones (8). Lycopene in tomatoes is converted by the temperature change involved in processing which allows the body to absorb it more easily. Given the health benefits of lycopene, scientists are now producing genetically-engineered tomatoes in order to increase the levels of lycopene
A recent study conducted at University of Toronto found that drinking processed tomato juice or eating spaghetti sauce on a regular basis helped reduce the levels of oxidized compounds in the body. This, in turn, helps to lower the risk of cancer and heart disease. Additional research is currently being done to further understand the role of lycopene in the disease-prevention process
